CONSULTING SERVICES FOR ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY OPERATIONS

  1. Property acquisition and set-up

A common mistake is for prospective assisted living facility owners to buy what seems like “just the right home,” only to find out that there are permitting, electrical, mechanical, and structural limitations for adapting it to the perfect fit. Additionally, there are fire compliance and zoning restrictions that impact the ability to obtain approval for the use of the building as an assisted living facility.

    This service package includes:

    • MLS search for property
    • Realtor buyer representation if applicable
    • County and state review of property history
    • Zoning, use and occupancy, and other permit-related investigations
    • Guidance for ADA fitting and modifications to meet COMAR regulations
    • Assistance with setting up for and a walkthrough prior to survey/inspection
  2. Understanding and meeting licensing requirements

Each state has specific standards that regulate the operations of assisted living facilities. The Office of Health Care Quality (OHCQ) licenses assisted living programs and oversees the quality of services provided to residents. Prior to operating an assisted living program in Maryland, the program must first obtain an assisted living program license from OHCQ.

    This service package includes:

    • Review of the State of Maryland requirements
    • County-specific application requirements
    • Assistance to complete licensure documentation
    • In-person support and preparation for county and state licensure survey
  3. Build your team

There is no “I” in team, and the staff on your team is one of the most critical elements to sustaining and growing a competitive senior community that is highly sought after and has a great reputation. The careful choice of staff will ultimately determine the failure or success of this venture.

    This service package includes:

    • Review of planned staffing structure
    • Shortlisting and screening of staff, including interviews and credential verification (client pays cost of advertising)
    • Onboarding orientation
  4. End-to-end consulting and support

An inclusive consulting package to guide you from start to opening. The package leverages healthcare skills, managerial experience, networking, and resource advantages offered by our principal owner. Duration not to exceed 12 months.

    This service package includes:

    1. Guidance and review of the business model

The goal of starting a business is never one size fits all. Before you make a huge investment, we take a critical look at the short-term and long-term goals of this venture. It is imperative that you know the numbers before you take the leap. You are encouraged to come with a draft of your business plan and not a blank slate.

    2. Form a legal entity and register for taxes

Whether you call it Suzie’s Nest or Blessed and Caring Hands, there needs to be an entity that holds the license to operate. While we do not provide tax or legal business registration advice, we do review your entity structure and business documentation prior to license application.

    3. Understand and meet your state’s licensing requirements

The Code of Maryland Regulations for Assisted Living Facilities is found in Chapter 10, Subsection 7. There are stipulated regulations (which are updated several times a year) by which managers and owners of assisted living facilities MUST abide. https://regs.maryland.gov/us/md/exec/comar/10.07.14. County-specific and, where relevant, city-specific permits may also be needed. Step-by-step support and documentation review prior to submission and prompt responses to queries are the fastest and most hassle-free approach to successful licensure.

    4. Secure or renovate a home for compliance

ZIP codes, neighborhoods, amenities, and accessibility make a good impression for both the potential resident and their loved ones who may tour your facility with them. We guide on amenities and décor with compliance and safety in mind. Be creative and have fun with this part of the process! At its core, senior communities are competitive when they attract the right clientele.

    5. Hire and orient qualified staff

Your management and caregiving staff can make or break your business. We cannot overemphasize the need for an above-average team of dedicated, well-trained, and caring healthcare personnel and caregivers. We coordinate the process of seeking, interviewing, and screening the right staff for the job, negotiating salaries, and onboarding appropriate candidates.

Build a brand and marketing plan that drives occupancy

If you do not market, you will not fill beds. While we will not pound the pavement, we will leverage our extensive network and make recommendations for marketing, strategies for brand name development, and provide valuable marketing contacts for growth.
